Biggest Work Place Time Wasters

This entry was posted on by .

We’re all guilty, there’s no denying it but it’s about being cognoscente of our actions and learning to cut down on the wasted time and being productive in office.

I pulled a few key time wasters I’ve heard the most feedback on as well as shared a great  info-graphic from Yast.

Instant Messaging | Though this can be a useful intra-office tool, more times than none it can make it productivity’s worst enemy. Let’s be honest, are you strictly using it to converse with colleagues or getting sucked into a 1/2 hour gossip sesh with friends or family members?

Meetings about Meetings | You know the hour meeting where you get together and end up with a list of what should be discussed in yet another meeting? Meetings are a necessary evil. If not ran appropriately they can be a colossal waste of time.

Distractions | How many times have you been in the ‘zone’ and got that “urgent” email. You reply and bam, you’re hit with a phone call and then the cycle thus begins. How about coworker side chit chat , or computer updates? No wonder why you’re struggling to get work done.

Social Networking | How times have changed when it comes to social platforms and texting. If you’re family and friends refrain from contacting you during work hours (like the good old days) you’ll be a lot more productive and won’t have to worry about falling behind on projects.

Web Surfing “Breaks” | You need a little mental break from work tasks and step away to check out that movie you’re planning on seeing this weekend. Before you know it, you have 7 tabs open in your browser. Checking out today’s news, pinning and those concert tickets. No need to ask where your afternoon went. 64% say they visit non-work related websites everyday during work hours.

Smoke and Coffee Breaks | Everyone needs to step away from the desk, and it’s been said that taking breaks can make you more productive overall. But, if you’re going out for smoke  or coffee runs every hour, chances are you’re not allowing yourself to be productive at all or really ever get into a work groove.

What do you think is your biggest time waster? How do you think you could improve your overall productivity? Share below in the comments.

Vol. 20: Fun Doesn’t Stop at Eminent SEO, Tips for Creatively Engaging Your Customers

This entry was posted on by .

Monster Mom

Ah, May… the month for Mothers!

A big Happy Mother’s Day to all you mommies out there! Here at Eminent SEO many of us are hard working moms and we know how much work goes in to being a mother!

A Fun Little Company Photo Shoot

Creative people spark creative ideas – this should come as no surprise, but how do you know when you’re working with a truly creative marketing firm?  At Eminent SEO, we want to highlight our creativity to make it more apparent to all our existing and new clients.  So, we decided to have professional photographer Bill Nash capture that aspect of our company’s personality in a recent photo shoot (you’ll be able to find this photo on our about page when it’s fully updated):

Why Creativity & Personality Sell to Online Consumers

Traditional marketing – where large corporations who were able to shout their message the loudest and get in your face with provocative ads – is losing its effectiveness.  In fact, Bill Simmons, of the Harvard Business Review, says traditional marketing is already dead.

Why is this happening?

It’s due mostly in part to the availability of the internet.  Prior to the internet, everyone had a television or radio, or saw advertising on billboards or flyers.  But now, with the internet available wherever you go, consumers can research companies, products, and services in their own way.  If they aren’t engaged nearly instantaneously, they move on to the next web site.  So, the key to advertising now lies in developing a unique, creative experience that almost immediately develops a personal connection with your online visitors.

At Eminent SEO, we use our creative personality to help you create a unique online experience for your online customers.

4 Tips for Creatively Engaging Online Visitors

In keeping with this newsletter’s theme, we figure it makes sense to give you a few ideas of how to quickly engage online searchers.  Here are a few ideas to help you get your own creativity flowing:

1. A Unique Web Design – Many websites you see have a home, services, about, and contact page.  This type of design does work, but in the web world, you can literally design your web page any way you want. Check out this design at the Australian Census Bureau – who’d have thought a government institution would be able to show us something about creativity?

2. Show a Video on Your Home Page – Generally stated, video helps increase conversions.  With a short, but engaging, video on your home page, you stand to stick out from the crowd and provide your visitors with a unique experience.

3. Precision Targeting – With digital marketing, you can laser-target your market.  How?  By researching and targeting the right keywords (long-tail keywords), you have an excellent idea of what searchers are looking for and what type of content to create to increase conversions.  Your keyword might only have 200 searches per month, but if you convert 10 of those into paying customers, that’s much more valuable than driving traffic to your site with a higher search volume that has little to no conversions.

4. Social Media – Although your natural inclination is to think social media is there to promote your company (which it is), it works best as a listening tool.  You will learn the exact questions on your customers’ minds, you can ask them for feedback in the form of a survey and give them a chance to win a reward for participating, and you can also learn some of the exact keywords they use to search for your products and services by observing what they’re saying on your different profiles.

That’s All Folks!

We hope to have sparked your creative side in this month’s newsletter.  If you need a little help developing a more creative brand identity and online marketing strategy, feel free to call us at 1-1.800.871.4130 or contact us online.

Camp Grounded | The Digital Detox Summer Camp For Adults

This entry was posted on by .

Camp Grounded Summer Camp for Adults

Notice how that phone almost never leaves your hand or pocket and how every meal or sunset looks like an Instagram photo opportunity? If you answered ‘yes’ to any of those, you may be due for a digital detox.

An awesome new summer camp aims to help “grown-ups unplug, getaway and be kids again.” Camp Grounded, is a retreat organized by The Digital Detox,  in Anderson Valley, California, June 14th-17th .

This four day all inclusive  “grown up summer camp”  incorporates a nostalgic 1970’s boy scouts camp atmosphere for 200 campers in a drug-and alcohol-free environment, who have a few basic rules to follow: no technology usage, and no work talk .

There is a strict disclaimer on the site, stressing that this is a summer camp and not a conference or networking event to “meet up or make contacts that further your career”, so don’t try and cheat the system!

If you’re not able to make the date for Camp Grounded, The Digital Detox has other regular monthly technology-free retreats, you can check out on their ‘Upcoming Retreats‘ page.

CareerBuilder Survey Reveals Most Wanted Office Perk

This entry was posted on by .

If you could have one perk at your workplace, what would it be?

A recent CareerBuilder survey revealed that half-day Fridays, an on-site fitness center and the ability to wear jeans scored highest on their results. More than 3,900 full-time workers nationwide took part in the survey.

job satisfaction

We currently posed the same question, on our Eminent Social Media Facebook page, so feel free to go contribute your input and answers as well! We’d love to hear what perk you’re leaning towards.

In addition to that same survey with CareerBuilder- two more questions were asked.  “How important is a title?” and “What ultimately entices workers to stay with a company?”

When it came down to the results of a title, 55 percent of the workers polled reflected that title wasn’t the most important factor. The top three to outrank job title were:

1. Flexible Schedule

2. Being Able to make a difference

3. Challenging Work

employee recognition

As far as, “What ultimately entices workers to stay with a company?”, the results weren’t too surprising. Here were the top three:

1. Provide Flexible Schedules

2. Increase Employee Recognition (awards, cash prizes, company trips)

3. Ask employees what they want and put feedback into action

We also decide to share this question on our Eminent SEO Facebook page – so stop by and place your input!

So I suppose, our ultimate question to you is, What determines YOUR overall job satisfaction?

You can see the full list of the results from the CareerBuilder Survey on PR Newswire

This entry was posted on by .

Working in a desk job environment makes it hard not to get caught up in work and forget to take breaks from time to time or even walk away to take lunch. You don’t realize how important those 15 minute breaks are to your mental health and keep you sane.

We discovered Calm.com, a site that offers both two and ten minute relaxation sessions. Decide which environment you want to look at, how long you want your break to be and let the relaxation begin.

Much like power naps- it’s a ‘power’ mediation for the busy worker. Best of all, Calm.com is free, absolutely no catch. So whether you decide to use it to break up your busy day, or an outlet to put your mind at ease before drifting off to sleep, we encourage you to try it!

Google vs. Yahoo: Choose Your Side

This entry was posted on by .

Search engine giants have had quite a summer thus far. While Yahoo has been busy unveiling its mobile-specific web browser Yahoo Axis, and publicly announcing that it was moving back to its original roots in ad-based strategies, Google – it seems – has taken the approach of: ‘let’s buy everything we can and make it ours.’

There is no denying that Google’s approach is a legal and lucrative way to expand your business, but many lately are asking: ‘is it ethical?’

There is a growing sense of distrust and loathing for Google amidst all of its purchases, updates, product unveilings, and day to day workings. Without a doubt, Google is the leader of search engines and is quickly becoming a leader of both the gadget and software fields as well.

By reaching its hundreds of arms into every corner of the tech industry, Google has the money, science, tech knowledge, and power to change the face of any market it is holding – for better or for worse.

With news of Google acquisitions, products, services and gadgets coming out daily, sometimes hourly, Yahoo’s Interim CEO Ross Levinsohn has guided his company to act quickly on its future endeavors.

Only a day ago, news broke that Yahoo had announced a global deal with Spotify, an online music program that has seen breakout success this past year. This is where the differences in strategies between Yahoo and Google become very apparent. While Google takes the stance of simply buying smaller companies outright. Yahoo has been busy brokering deals and partnerships with the companies it sees promise in. In fact, today Yahoo also announced it had struck partnership deals with both Clear Channel and I Heart Radio

Another aspect to Yahoo’s newly adopted business model is that they seem to be striving for more executive expertise. Yahoo recently hired John Buchanan (Former VP of Marketing for Electronic Arts) and Rich Cusick (Formerly of Chemistry.com) as the new VP of Entertainment and Women’s Lifestyles.

As the race heats up between these two companies, we are sure to get more updates and press releases throughout the remainder of the summer. Whether you are a die-hard fan of Google or a Yahoo-loyal holdout, every web user will win from this. As the rival search engine companies continue to out-create, out-develop, and one-up each other, we will get a steady stream of new toys.
