Google Search Just kicked it up a notch with “Search Plus Your World”

This entry was posted on by .

Google search received one of its biggest updates in a decade yesterday. Essentially Google has made it pretty much mandatory for any and all individuals as well as companies to get a Google+ account to gain any search accreditation. Google+ will be a part of everything Google does on the web and mobile, and being that Google is the number one search engine; you’d be silly not to jump on this growing band wagon.

This Google+ infused approach assumes personal connections as well as relevance. Any links shared by your Google+ connections are given more accreditation and will show up in the first page of web search results with the individuals profile avatar on the left. You will also be able to see, based on keyword relevance, Google+ posts. To put in terms you can easily understand, Google indexes the Google+ posts just like every other page, but they will show up in your search if the individual/poster is connected to you via the Google+ network. Images posted to Google+ will also show up in web and image search results, again, only to searchers who are connected to the originating person who posted the photo being searched. Lastly, like Facebook, in the search bar you will be able to ‘Google’ specific people who have a Google+ network profiles and see content from people you are connected to.

Jack Menzel, Google’s web search product management director, mentioned in an interview with VentureBeat, “Everything we show you, we label that very clearly and explain why that’s showing up.”

The social search integrations, which Google is calling “search plus your world,” can be toggled on and off by using the “person” and “world” icons in the top right corner of search results, basically allowing you to view or hide your personal search results from the Google search.

Next you may notice the promoted Google+ accounts. On the right side of the results page, you will see featured profiles and pages, along with a link reading, “learn how you could appear here too.” Though these featured accounts are currently algorithmically determined, we can see these being direct competition with Facebook’s social ads, which is HUGE! Facebook has been banking some pretty amazing revenue from their geo-targeted ads based on social graph data. With Google+, Google is on its way to building a powerhouse of even more rich social graph data to pull even more direct and specific social ad marketing.

Menzel told VentureBeat, “The more information you have associated with your Google+ profile, the better it gets. For this launch, we’re just talking about web search and image search,” said Menzel, “but I wouldn’t rule out improvements to those other products.”

Google+ results are coming today to web search, and although the company can’t talk timelines for future rollouts, we fully expect to see Google+ results in Google News, Google Maps, Google Shopping and other search properties soon.

Google+ is not just a social network; it’s the wave of a personalized search. Good or bad? What do you think? Share your comments on Google+ and personalized search below…

Google Algorithm Update – Why Fresh Content Is More Important Than Ever!

This entry was posted on by .

On November 3rd 2011 Google Officially Announced a change to their algorithm said to impact at least 35% of web searches. The change is intended to update the order to deliver “real time” or more up-to-date search results relevant to the topic being searched. They are particularly focused on the type of search and will be providing the freshest information available on things like recent events, current reviews, hot topics and breaking news.

The updated Google algorithm is going to weigh the different types of searches and serve up your results based on their internal decision as to whether that search justifies a fresh result. For example, a popular how to blog on training your dog may still be relevant and end up being served at the top for related searches – no matter how old the content (think “how to house train a dog” “puppy house training”). However, breaking news such as something related to brand new technology, will always be served up higher in the results, driving down older listings – even if they are still popular and relevant.

Searches on recent news and events will now show at the top of the results even if they are only minutes old. For popular, recurring events, such as the Superbowl, the Grammy’s, the Presidential Election, etc Google assumes you are more interested in the recent information posted on the subject – even if you don’t specifically search that way.

THIS IS BIG FOR MARKETERS and BUSINESSES WHO RELY ON ORGANIC SEARCH!

This means that people don’t have to search for things like “current”, “2011”, “news”, etc, those terms will be assumed.

Example:

If I type in “Michael Jackson” – I am going to receive the latest news on the Jackson Trail because of its current newsworthiness, even though I didn’t include “news” “trial” “death” or anything related in my search.

Content that is regularly updated, such as consumer reviews will also be featured up top, above the other organic listings.

This algorithm “freshness update” is an expansion from the Caffeine update Google launched last year. The launch of Caffeine helped Google index content quicker so they could serve up real time information to the public quicker as well. Of course there was also the Google Panda algorithm update, which had a different affect on content – it was meant to detect poor quality, older content and decrease the Google results for this type of content.

With the devaluing of older, unpopular content and the additional value placed on fresh, up-to-date content on popular subjects – it’s pretty clear that there will be a substantial change to the way the general public receives their information from Google. The new algorithm update alone is said to impact 35% of search results! That’s HUGE!

What does this mean for you?

As a business who depends on organic search engine traffic it’s even more important than it was before that you keep your site fresh with current information relevant to your business and what is happening in your industry now! Content has always been king – but now FRESH content is king. We recommend keeping your blog up to date, adding client testimonials, your monthly company newsletter, new images and videos; anything to keep the content on your site fresh.

Google lets you Block Websites and Contribute to Panda

This entry was posted on by .

Now you can be a part of the Panda updates by blocking websites that provide less than useful information. The best part is it’s easy to do, all you have to do is log into your Google account and start looking up whatever your heart desires.

Once you have checked out a link and decide that the content on there was irrelevant, unhelpful  – you hit the back button, right? Now once back on the search results page something amazing has happened, a note has appeared beneath or next to the link:

Once clicked, like magic Google removes all the links that came from that domain and now your search is that much more relevant to what you were looking for. OOPS! Chose the wrong link? No problem, click ‘undo’ and you are good to go.

Now this super power hasn’t been around for very long, only since March, and it wasn’t until Panda’s global roll out that Google began looking at this blocked data as well as their Chrome  Personal Blocklist extension as useful tool.

This has not rolled out to non-U.S. websites, but keep your eyes open for a new ‘experiment’ in the near future.

Let’s Talk SEO

This entry was posted on by .

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. The search engines are looking at a LOT of things, but one primary way to ensure your site gains authority and ranks for the keywords people are searching for to find your site – is to build links. So, we thought we would give you a few Link Building Tips:

*Tip: Use longer tailed and geo targeted keywords in your link building for better conversions!

It’s important to understand your client base and what they are searching for, but it’s more important to target keywords that will CONVERT than those with just the highest search volumes. Many times the long tail keyword phrases (think: “bankruptcy lawyer in Phoenix Arizona”) are much better for conversions than the root term (ex: “bankruptcy lawyer”) even though they have lower search volumes. Also, long tail keywords are generally much less competitive and therefore much easier (and less costly) to rank for!

*Tip: Use variety in your keyword selection to avoid an artificial backlink portfolio! (Panda Update says so!)

It’s always been important to target multiple keyword phrases and pages within your website, but after the Panda update it’s become even more important. Google is sophisticated enough to detect a pattern in the keyword usage. So, if you want to rank for an important term, use it – but also use similar supporting terms in a variety of ways to ensure Google doesn’t flag your new links as potentially phony. Example: Want to rank for “Nike Shoes”? Build links using terms like: “Buy Nike Shoes”, “Buy Nike Shoes Online”, “Discount Nike Shoes”, “Mens Nike Shoes”, etc

*Tip: Your links should come from many different types of websites for a more natural looking portfolio!

Sure, there are high quality sites, strong in the key elements that make it an ideal site for hosting your link (think: higher Page Rank, Aged Domain, Strong in Relevancy, etc) but if every link pointing to your site uses the “perfect” criteria, it actually creates suspicion with Google. Not everyone that would naturally chose to link to you would come from high quality sites. Mix it up and make sure there is variety in your backlinks. The more diverse, the more natural the link building efforts appear.
